Herrick owns mistake after first home start

Fin Herrick did not hide behind the occasion after his first home start. The 20-year-old felt West Ham had done enough to take Fulham to penalties, but accepted he could have done more to stop Oscar Bobb's winner in the 3-2 League Cup defeat.

Speaking to West Ham TV, Herrick said the team had proved it could compete with Premier League opposition. He was just as clear about his own performance, saying he needed to review the third goal and be hard on himself.

Herrick also credited goalkeeper coaches Rui Barbosa and Bill Lepine, along with Nuno Espírito Santo, for his progress. After 14 years in West Ham's Academy, the landmark start mattered. His own verdict was more useful than any ceremony: there is progress, and still plenty to improve.
