Wrexham reportedly win race for Steve Nickson

West Ham’s interest in Steve Nickson appears to have ended with Wrexham reportedly agreeing to appoint him as sporting director.

Read West Ham, citing The Athletic, says the Newcastle United recruitment chief has signed a contract and will begin work on 2 September after serving his notice. The same outlet says West Ham held positive talks with Nickson earlier in the summer and considered him for a senior football-operations role.

Craig Hope had previously reported that neither West Ham nor Wrexham was a settled destination. The reported signed contract is the important new detail. West Ham have since appointed Nils Koppen as director of player recruitment, according to Read West Ham, so the club is not starting from scratch. It has still missed out on a candidate with 15 years at Newcastle and experience beyond a narrower recruitment brief.
